제프 베이조스의 우주기업 블루오리진이 차세대 대형 발사체 ‘뉴글렌’ 로켓의 엔진 연소 시험 도중 대형 폭발 사고를 내면서 우주 산업 전반에 우려가 번지고 있다. 로이터 등 외신에 따르면 이번 사고로 베이조스의 우주·위성 사업에 비상이 걸린 것은 물론, 미국 항공우주국(NASA)의 아르테미스 달 탐사 계획까지 일정 차질이 불가피해졌다.

30일(현지시간) 로이터통신에 따르면 앞서 28일 미국 플로리다주 케이프커내버럴 우주군 기지 발사단지(LC-36)에서 다음 주 발사를 앞둔 뉴글렌 로켓의 엔진 시험 도중 거대한 폭발이 일어났다. 인명 피해는 없었으나 내부 관계자는 “발사대가 사실상 완전히 파괴됐다”며 “복구에 최소 6개월 이상이 걸릴 것”이라고 전했다.

당장 아마존의 저궤도(LEO) 위성 인터넷 사업이 직격탄을 맞게 됐다. 아마존은 3200기 이상의 위성 군집 가운데 절반을 2026년 7월까지 궤도에 올려야 하는 규제 기한을 앞두고 뉴글렌 발사에 크게 기대고 있었다. 우주 산업 컨설팅업체 애널리시스 메이슨은 “대체 발사체인 스페이스X의 팰컨9은 뉴글렌의 절반 수준만 실을 수 있어, 업체를 바꾸더라도 발사 횟수가 크게 늘어나는 부담을 안게 된다”고 지적했다.

NASA의 달 탐사 계획에도 변수가 생겼다. 블루오리진은 2028년 아르테미스 4 임무에서 우주비행사를 달에 내릴 착륙선 ‘블루문’을 올해 말 처음 발사할 예정이었으며, 최근에는 달 표면에서 탈 탐사차 2대를 납품하는 계약까지 따낸 핵심 파트너이기 때문이다.

한편 이번 폭발 이후 블루오리진의 라이벌 기업인 스페이스X 창업자 일론 머스크는 자신의 사회관계망서비스(SNS) X에 “빨리 회복하길 바란다”며 ‘고난을 넘어 별을 향해’라는 뜻의 라틴어 격언인 ‘아드 아스트라 페르 아스페라(Ad astra per aspera)’라는 글을 남겼다.
